Turn client news into sales leads with AI
A simple but powerful way to engage advertisers right away is to lead sales calls and letters with a reference to their own recent news—harvested automatically from the web and a sales email inbox signed up to advertisers’ own newsletters. An AI agent can automate the process.
Why does this matter? Knowing your advertisers’ news makes sellers sound remarkably knowledgeable—and that news often contains advertising gold, tips about what the advertiser has an urgent need to promote.Â
Instead of starting every conversation by uncovering a need, sellers can start with something the prospect has already invested in: a new product, expansion, partnership, award, acquisition, event, or other announcement. The opportunity is to help them get more distribution for that message.
For B2B, imagine a pet store magazine whose advertisers are primarily pet food and accessory manufacturers and distributors. Or a builder magazine selling to companies in the building-products industry. With easy access to client news, sellers can incorporate relevant announcements directly into sales letters and calls.
The same approach works for B2C. A publication like City Health & Fitness Magazine could track news from trainers, gyms, health-food stores, and other advertisers—and then use those stories to start conversations about reaching more of your audience.
Here’s How to Automate It
First, you’ll need:
- A spreadsheet with your advertisers
2. A Spreadsheet for the output: Company, headline linked to source blog, summary, date.Â
Then, give Claude Cowork this prompt:
“Create a skill called [niche]-advertisers-blog-tracker that checks a list of advertiser blogs weekly and logs new posts to a spreadsheet.
Context: I sell [product/service] to companies that serve the [niche] industry. I maintain a Google Sheet listing advertisers [url of output spreadsheet] we track, with columns for Company, headline of the blog linked to the blog URL, and Date Published. Some vendors have no blog — mark those ‘No blog found’ and do not re-check them.
Please build an advertiser news tracker skill. The skill should, on each run:
- Read the advertiser list from [spreadsheet link/ID].
- As a supplementary source, search my inbox ([your email]) for vendor newsletter or announcement emails from each vendor’s domain (e.g.
from:advertiser.com) covering the period since the last run. Use this to catch posts an email announced that the blog scrape might miss — but the blog is still the source of truth when both agree. - Visit each advertiser’s blog (skip any marked ‘No blog found’) and pull the latest post’s headline, publish date, and the direct article URL (not just the blog homepage).
- Compare each headline against what’s already logged for that vendor — flag as New, Unchanged, or Failed (only mark Failed if both the blog fetch and the Gmail scan came up empty).
- For each new post, write one sentence — not a rewritten headline — summarizing what the post covers and why it matters to [target audience — e.g., ‘ad agency owners,’ ‘restaurant marketers,’ ‘HR directors’]. If a post has no relevance to that audience, say so instead of forcing a connection.
- Log results into a new dated tab (never overwrite a prior run) with columns: Company, Blog URL, Date, Latest Post Headline (hyperlinked to the article), Summary, Status. Color-code rows by status (new/unchanged/failed) and add a Summary tab with run counts.
- If no tool can write directly into the existing Google Sheet, say so and produce a standalone formatted Excel file instead — don’t silently fail.
Trigger phrases: ‘run the advertiser news tracker,’ ‘check advertiser news,’ ‘what are advertisers blogging about,’ ‘update the advertiser news tracker.’ ‘update the advertiser blog tracker.”Â
Check the results. Extend the workflow by putting this on a schedule, training the agent to post drafts of sales letters that use this information.
Here’s an example to make your own:
Subject:Â Saw the news about [Company’s News]
Hi [First Name],
I saw the news about [specific announcement, product launch, expansion, award, partnership, etc.]—congratulations!
That’s the type of [message, announcement, product, service, event] that our audience of [key audience value proposition] is always interested in knowing more about.Â
If you have a few minutes this week, let’s talk about how to put this into our next [newsletter, social feed, print magazine, content marketing]. Book a time with me [here].
Best regards,Â
[Seller Name]
For advertisers on social media, there are a couple of other ways to go by adding to the prompt:
Search-based (works today, no login needed) — for each advertiser, run a targeted web search like site:linkedin.com/company/[advertiser] OR site:x.com/[advertiser] and pull whatever’s publicly indexed. Fast and fits the existing tracker pattern, but search engines don’t index every post, and results can lag.
That should do the trick!
